Oh, yes, I was right. So far, the series is getting better as it goes along. The mystery, I found, was more gripping than the previous installment; I didn't guess the guilty party this time around. Even so, I found myself more engrossed with Nicholas Brisbane and his relationship with Lady Julia.
This installment had something the previous one lacked: more goings on. More things were happening. And there was more than one mystery, however small. Also, a most intriguing group of characters.
Looking forward to the third installment. I have no doubt I will do the same as I did with this one: Gobbling it up in two days time.

really enjoyed this. Typical Lady Julia rip-roaring yarn.
Second in a series; next is out in March 09. I hunted this down after 4 trips to various libraries, like a junkie looking for a score. More of what is in the first book; great characters, good humor. The mystery is well crafted and strikes a perfect balance between being too twisty or predictable. Lady Julia continues to grow and change. These are just plain delightful.

Solid second installment. Makes you really think about how useless and outmoded the aristocracy really is, plus a light romance and mystery (or two) to boot.
3.5: Julia can definitely be irritating at moments—the self-awareness of the first book didn’t carry as well into this one, and there were moments that were like... “Girl, really?” with regards to her sense of privilege and other moments. I think, also, there wasn’t as much growth or depth in her character, and she continues to do truly idiotic things (e.g. confronting murderers by herself). But... unfortunately I continue to live for the moment she and Brisbane get together, so.
I think I liked this one better than the first. Lady Julia is far more interesting in this one now that she's learning to be more assertive. Her family and their dynamic is also explored more thoroughly, and makes for some fun moments. Brisbane is still a little too...much. But I can overlook that. I definitely will continue with this series.
So I liked it...but I found myself skimming quite a bit. It felt like half the book was over before someone even died!
And I AM NOT getting the romance aspect of this...I realize that SHE seems to be certain that he is into her, but I am not getting that vibe. Other than looking at her intently he is giving off some bad signals. Mostly the NEVER contacting you part. This is not sexy behavior.
...and I'm sorry...if you are falling all over yourself trying to get me to NOT fall in love with you...then....OH SHIT...that would totally turn me on....dammit. So as you can see...I'm still all in.
Already picked up the third book...but if nothing happens here...let's be honest, then I'll pick up book 4.

More than a couple of plots in this one, most of which don't get sorted out until 2/3 of the way through and I think each was rather competently done - the murder itself included quite a twist that delightfully surprised me.
