I hate not finishing books but this was just so.. meh that I couldn’t finish it.
I first watched the series and thought that was great. So I thought awesome, a book like this would be fun to read. The storyline is great and the mystery is mysterious. However…
The book is not well executed. The author was trying so hard to write like Austen but it failed miserably. She was recapping P&P every few pages for no real reason (honestly who here picked up this book for any other reason than loving P&P?)
She wrote long paragraphs of backstory for characters who were mentioned once and had absolutely nothing to do with the storyline. I could not get that far into it because it was so boring.
Not a book for Austen purists or people who like good writing in general.

1 / 5 stars ⭐️

She did my man Colonel Fitzwilliam dirty and I can never forgive her (😂).

It was okay. Like the murder mystery part of it was good.

I guess it was specifically the epilogue that bored me. You can tell the epilogue was maybe the bit of fanfiction the author most wanted to write because it was basically just Elizabeth and Darcy talking about their relationship (as if they never had talked about it during their several years of marriage.)

Maybe it's not fair to base my rating so much on the epilogue, but that's how it is. Would've been four stars if the ending hadn't been so unfortunate.

Death Comes to Pemberley opens several years after Lizzie’s marriage to Darcy. It’s the delightful result of P.D James’ crime writing prowess and her love of Austen’s novels. Preparations for Lady Anne’s ball, an important annual fixture of the social calendar, are thrown into disarray by a murder on the Pemberley estate. I liked the way the characters felt true to the original yet this story ventured into a darker side of life including magistrate’s investigations, prisons, and courtroom scenes but also public houses, blackmail, young people dying of incurable diseases, acknowledgement of the long hard hours worked by servants, and the plight of unwed mothers. It was almost as if Charles Dickens had penned a few scenes. Characters from other Austen novels like Emma and Persuasion were also mentioned which was an additional fun aspect.

Was pretty long and some of the words flew over my head. I did like the descriptions of nature and the atmosphere though. And soft Darcy moments.

This is mediocre fan fiction. There were so many anachronisms, so much mischaracterization of the original characters, and no real mystery to speak of.

This story is based on Jane Austen's novel,  however, it doesn't hold up to the original. The story chooses to focus on some of the least likable characters from P&P and it doesn't even allow the characters to develop. The story tries to add another layer to the original story, but it ultimately fails and so reading it feels like a waste of time.
