I struggled with this one. Not because of the content or the language, but because the narrator was so bland and, frankly, annoying/pretentious, and I felt like that wasn't much substance to the story. I really wanted to read after seeing the trailer for the upcoming film American Fiction, and so badly wanted to be impressed by this novel. The story was not what I was expecting from the synopsis and it was a very slow-moving/developing plot. I also struggled to understand why the point of the random passages/conversations/"stories" that frequented the story were put in there. Why did we randomly have a conversation with random German dudes? Why the random sentences in different languages? I just failed to grasp the point and what they added to the story. I almost DNF'd this one but I was genuinely interested to see how the author dealt with the success of his satire or how it broke him. I did get invested in the main character's mother and her decline and I think that is what ultimately kept me going. Just underwhelming to me.

I appreciated how the author, especially at the end, points out how ready people are to believe that Monk Ellison's book was written by Stagg Lee (listened to the audiobook so might be spelling names wrong). Even when he says it's himself, people can't believe it because only "a real black person" or "someone from the ghetto could capture the truth like this" -- even though Monk Ellison is black, there is something about society (racism) that longs to believe a farcical piece of fiction over truth.
