Arthur struggles to feel accepted in todays world. He sees flashbacks to his life with his father. Meanwhile, dark and dangerous creatures swim to the surface from deep, deep below. Arthur and Mera are at the Lighthouse when an officer knocks on their door asking for help. They go north to a little town that was attacked by the monsters: The Trench. The monsters are fought off by the Atlantans, but the citizens and the military still aren’t appreciative of Arthur. With the help of Dr Shin, Aquaman and Mera learn where the monsters come from and journey to their home.  Arthur fights off the monsters and seals off the Trench, returning the kidnapped civilians back to the surface. Finally earning a slight bit of respect.

I read the first two volumes of the New 52 Aquaman because so many sources said it was surprisingly good. Gotta say, I still don't care about Aquaman and I still think Geoff Johns is a horribly boring writer. Now I'm making my way through Johns' first three volumes of Justice League and feeling the same way. Maybe it's time to go back and read Grant Morrison's JLA to see if I care about this superteam at all, even when handled by one of my favourite writers in comics.

Geoff Johns is good at pulling chatacters out of a pit, and Aquaman is officially out of the Trench. Will continue reading.

I do enjoy how they embrace the fact that the character is seen as a joke by some. A good start to the relaunch and there is definite potential for this series to get good.

WOW I loved this! I had really no idea what to expect from this. I’ve never read an aquaman story and really have no background knowledge of the character but oh my god this was such a great introduction to him! I’m so excited to keep reading more of this! Gotta go order volume 2!

A fun read with fantastic art. I thought it started out strong, but felt a little rushed in the last few "issues". Georff Johns really can tell a story and I'll probably take a look at the next collection when it comes out. Ivan Reis's artwork outshines the story and pushed this book from 3 to 4 stars for me.
