It has been raining straight now for the past two days. I figure I cant get a more appropriate time or setting then that to start reading the New52 Aquaman.

I'm not all that well versed in my Aquaman history or lore, but I have to say that after reading these first 6 issues...I am intrigued. I am excited to sink my teeth into a character that I don't have a whole lot of nostalgic baggage already attached to. I have no benchmark from previous Aquaman adventures, So I have a pretty unique opportunity here that I don't normally get in comics anymore.

This first trade gave me a great introduction to the character. It was done well enough that I am about to promptly move onto the 2nd trade. Not a whole heck of a lot really happened in this first arc, but I suppose it didnt really need to. I got the introduction I needed, and I got the hook on what will be happening in the next arc.

And that`s all I really got so far. He`s Aquaman, He has a hot girlfriend, and he really likes water.

Also...he has a pretty sweet golden trident.

For now, that's good enough for me.

The first half of the story is surprisingly great: funny, different, suspenseful, all by the really good Geoff Johns. The second half is not as we get the very bad Johns with convenient characters and hamfisted dialogue. That said, this is still one of the best Aquaman stories out there which says more about the character than anything else.

WOW I loved this! I had really no idea what to expect from this. I’ve never read an aquaman story and really have no background knowledge of the character but oh my god this was such a great introduction to him! I’m so excited to keep reading more of this! Gotta go order volume 2!

After reading this comic, I remember one episode of The Big Bang Theory: The Justice League Recombination (on air December 2010, based on imdb info), especially one quote from Raj Koothrappali.

Raj Koothrappali: I don't want to be Aquaman. He sucks. He sucks underwater. He sucks fish pee.

Aquaman sucks

On November 2011, Aquaman #1 published, as if to challenge Raj's opinion. Raj should get a time machine, went 1 year to the future then read the comic, so he would proud to wear Aquaman costume.

New 52 Aquaman is one bad ass super hero:

bad ass Ivan Reis version

Very entertaining. Quite amusing in taking the plunge into self-awareness with Aquaman angsting about being 'everyone's least favorite superhero.' I've also quite fallen in love with Mera.

Out of New 52, this one was a gem. The guy that can "talk to fish" gets bombarded by everyone making assumptions of him and his powers while trying to grab lunch in the first issue. When he orders "fish and chips," man, people go bezerk. "How does it feel to be everyone's least favorite superhero?" somebody asks. Getting all that meta-awareness out, the rest of the series takes on the Atlantis and mythology storylines that make his character so much fun to work with. Definitely check it out!

Of course, not gonna let ya'll slide for letting Aquaman have a nice and secure set of fishy scale armor that covers even his neck, but made Mera/Aquawoman's armor have a big ole opening just to show her huge cleavage with no neck protection. Seriously, guys?

I knew practically nothing about Aquaman when I picked this up. I didn't even know there was a female named Mera with similar abilities. I'm glad I know now. Although nothing huge happened plot wise, I leaned a lot and enjoyed this very much. The trench dwellers might be one of the most terrifying things I've ever seen.

Really strong start to an intriguing sereies. I like how they started by acknowledging Aquaman's status as a punch line. It was a good way to address the obvious and move forward. I love Aquadog and I'm really excited to read book 2.
