For the first 180 pages, I was seriously considering giving up on this book as it just seemed to be dragging and not going anywhere, but someone convinced me to keep going, and I am glad I did (thank you, Francesca...if you are reading this review, you were correct). The second half did pick up in pace, and the twist that the author provided made all the effort of the first part of the book worth it. One of the twists I managed to work out, but everything else that was revealed left me shaking my head. How authors come up with these twists time after time will forever amaze me.

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me!

This is my first Claire Douglas book and it is safe to say that it did not disappoint.

This story follows a young couple, Saffy and Tom, who have just moved into Saffy’s Grandmother’s old house that they did not know existed. Not until the Grandmother, Rose Gray, had to move to a nursing home due to a diagnosis of dementia.

Saffy’s mother, Lorna, had moved away to Spain. She has Saffy when she was only 16. Saffy, now 24, is pregnant with her own child, renovating her house, ready for the baby.

But as the builders are digging up the garden for the kitchen extension, two bodies are discovered.

This then becomes a police investigation, starting with questioning her Grandmother. She lived in the house between the 1970s-1980s. As she is being questioned by the police, she starts to remember more and more, and begins to unfold the ugly truth.

This book is addictive, emotional, and will make you feel fury like no other, definitely worth the read.

The setting, from different character perspectives was incredibly done, and the flashbacks to the past added to the depth of the story.

From discovering bodies to broken relationships, you will definitely want to add this book to your TBR!

" ...that our memories are forever evolving, so we only remember the version of the memory we last recalled rather than the original event "

What a wild ride... so so many trigger warnings!
My first Claire Douglas book, and will surely be not the last!
This by far has one of the unique & twisted plots I have read. I may not be surprised by the ending twist as I have already guessed & predicted it, but even so.. It was still undeniably so good!
Loooved how it was told in multiple POV's with short chapters between past & present.

Though this was a slow paced story, it was so well written and gripping that it'll keep you interested. Storyline was so suspenseful, clever and  just one of a kind!

Great thriller read. First book I’ve read by Claire Douglas & I was not disappointed.

Really enjoyed the generational narration, from the daughter, mother & granddaughter. Thought the twists & turns were well executed & I had so many theories throughout on what happened. Loved the ending & the final reveal.

Would recommend, can’t wait to read more of her books!

Not part of the review, but an observation: I've grown used to adult main characters being younger than me. In this case, the adult main character's MOTHER was younger than me, and that's just not okay. :D
