Really enjoyed this murder mystery! With different POV executed so well that you can hear the switch in the characters voice! Twisty and turning to keep you guessing throughout!
Interesting concept flawed by weak character development and effective story-writing lost in translation.
Decent first half tarnished by the latter half with messy tie ups.
The Couple at No. 9 follows a new couple who have moved into a new cottage. However, upon renovating the property they unearth human remains from 30 years ago.
Starting off positively, I enjoyed the first half of this book. It was decently written, thorough and had a plenitude of viewpoints and backstories. The story was slowly gearing up to a juicy thriller and I was excited for the ride I was about to go on.
However, for how much potential this ride had, it inevitably left me feeling disappointed. The second half of the book just felt messy and confusing. I found this was an issue with another one of Claire Douglas’ books ‘The Girls Who Disappeared’. I fear the author does not know how to end a book with an array of plot twists that you either don’t expect or are so far fetched and ridiculous they don’t make sense to the story and prose she has presented.
I also had no connection to any of the characters in this book. They all felt very one note, there was no humour aspects, no change of emotion and I fear the research wasn’t done in to dementia and the complexity of it.
I was going to give this a 3 stars originally due to the first half of the book being decent, however upon further review I have given other thrillers the same rating for better.
All in all, I wouldn’t overly recommend this book. Sorry about it.
