I would have loved if she delved into her own interracial relationship and that dynamic and I’d there was any tension etc. other than that I enjoyed the book and all of the essays felt timely still. A little dated with the references to difference and need for solidarity across the binary when gender as we name it is more expansive. I also acknowledge that I’m reading this work decades out from when the essays were written and published so times have changed and privileges acquired.

I learned something from each of the essays/speeches, but my favorite were -uses of the erotic, the uses of anger, and learning from the 60s. 
Those were full of insight and beauty that I will carry with me.

I always knew Lorde was a brilliant and insightful writer and activist but had never actually read anything by her, and thank goodness that’s no longer the case. She’s simultaneously forceful and delicate, angry and understanding, idealistic and haunted. Aside from the powerful prose what constantly struck me was how relevant everything she wrote about in the 70s and 80s is in 2024–not just metaphorically or generally, but specifically. Whether it’s about US imperialism and foreign policy or using “lesbian” as a isolationist tactic in movements or Black women being mistreated by white and non-Black POC (very much including women) or the difficulty of maintaining a multiracial movement or the difficulty of raising boys under white supremacist patriarchy (especially Black boys), it’s both troubling and soothing that we are still fighting the same fight but learning new ways to be comrades.
