I thought the strongest and most interesting pieces were about visiting the Soviet Union & Granada. The weakest piece was the one about how black women hate each other. It felt very narrow and generalizing.
A striking collection full of criticism, analysis and insight, tied together by beautiful writing. Sometimes it is brilliantly stark and simple and sometimes I will to chew on it on for awhile and sometimes those are the same parts

Phenomenal book. Phenomenal mind. Truly just one of the most brilliant writers we’ve ever had. Prior to reading this I’d only known Lorde’s essay “Uses of the Erotic” (kinda impossible to be around Lidia Yuknavitch for a few years without encountering it) and I was so glad to reread that as well as dive deep into the rest of these essays and speeches. One of those books where I wanted to share pictures of so many paragraphs that it quickly became ridiculous; you’ll just have to go and buy the book.

In these essays, Audre Lorde speaks on her experiences as a Black lesbian in the U.S during the 70's and 80's. She has said that she doesn't write theory, she is a poet. This is evident in her work - the understanding it evokes and the vulnerability she shares. "An Interview: Audre Lorde and Adrienne Rich", "Uses of Anger" and "Eye to Eye" were some of my favourite sections. If you are stuck on the first few essays I recommend you keep going, I found the latter 2/3 of the book very insightful and somehow distinct from the first 1/3.
