You know I had to read these after Benedict Cumberbatch killed that in episode one, my god
The first two book were wonderful. Then it proceeded to go downhill. I think I just got tired of reading about a spoiled rich kid ... regardless of how he acquired his mental illnesses and problems, I got tired of reading about it.
Clearly well written but way, way too depressing and ugly for my particular tastes. Everyone was just so........ugly. One generation after another and nobody ever breaks free or makes any progress. It's like it's daring you NOT to kill yourself by the end.
Greatly funny and terrible. Some really dreadful and some really charming characters, all extremely entertaining.
Mean people being horrible to each other. Perhaps one book at a time every couple years would be tolerable, but all in one piece it becomes tiresome. I read about half and got fed up.
The mini-series was a welcome surprise, and still frequents my thoughts, for better or worse. It's not often that I'll read a book after watching a movie adaptation, but this one was completely worth it. They're both great, and the differences make it worth exploring each in their own time.
2.5
Obviously frustrated at the character, but he does sort of (kind of?) redeem himself at the end. Maybe? Lots of family trauma. And yes, the author seems to be poking fun/critiquing a certain class of people.
Edit: watching the series now - it does such a good job with the book. And makes the book seems better, even tho it follows the content fairly faithfully.

i tried several times to get into this book, but it just didnt happen. there seemed to be a real distance between the characters and between the characters and myself...something that continued reading did not alleviate.
I'm not actually finished, but I can't carry on reading this. Too much, too nasty, and frankly, that supposedly marvelous prose style? I don't rate it. It strikes me as awkward and clumsy, as opposed to stark. So: nah.
