I knew when Katee Robert announced her Deal with a Demon series that I would be hooked. Her first installment The Dragon's Bride was an incredible book. I've been waiting patiently for The Kraken's Sacrifice for months and was thrilled when she released it early to Patreon subscribers.
However, I found this book lacking the spark that made it's predecessor special. Catalina is a very interesting character -- mouthy, challenging, and someone who loves to get under people's skin. Her fiery, loud personality masks inner trauma from past relationships and her parental figures though it's not something the book dives into very hard. Neither does the book discuss much regarding Thane's former love. It focuses solely on the feelings that these two harbor about their pasts which allows it to be very character focused, but doesn't give us any time to really develop our own feelings about either past trauma. I felt myself being very blasé about Catalina's mother and Thane's past husband. I would've loved more background on both situations to really connect with the characters.
What this book does RIGHT however is utilize tentacles to their full potential. Catalina's aversion to water and her development with Thane was excellent. The book is funny in some parts and heart-wrenching in others. It's a fun little brat-breaking novel with an opposites attract bent. While it wasn't up to the Dragon's Bride's standard, I'm still excited to see what comes next in The Gargoyle's Captive.
