If you’re wanting to read a frequently banned or challenged book but don’t want to be depressed out of your mind, I would recommend looking elsewhere. But if you’re okay with a sad read this will probably be worth your time.

This is only the second book I’ve read by Toni Morrison, but her writing style really resonates with me. With any other author, I think the use of the Dick and Jane passage as a framing device would have come off as really ham fisted, but Morrison pulls it off.

After three years of having this on my bookshelf I have finally finished The Bluest Eye. While I wish I liked this more, and wanted to like this more, I found that the book was extremely scattered and depressing. There’s so much sexual violence, domestic abuse, poverty, and racism spreed throughout each of the pages that it made it hard to want to read. Pecola from birth was set up to fail from all the adults that were supposed to protect her.

I’m happy I read it and finally finished but wow was that a tough read.
