it shows this is morrison's debut - it has all the typical aspects of her writing (racial commentary, deeply flawed characters, achronological and poetic writing style), but comes off weaker and less impressive than her later works.

This is a heavy book. Morrison's writing was beautiful, this is such as strong debut. It's heartbreaking, but I like that she doesn't shy away from really dark topics.

I loved this book. I only deducted 1/4 of a star because of a couple disturbing graphic descriptions that I thought were unnecessary and took away from my reading experience somewhat. Not a judgment of Morrison's writing so much as my preference. I still highly recommend this book.
