Though the autistic community holds a special place in my heart, I normally wouldn't have picked up this book. It was hard to read at times, listening to the way that autistic people were misdiagnosed, misunderstood, and mistreated. But I'm so glad I did pick it up, as I learned so much (which is obviously the point) and it hammered home so many crucial points. It highlighted how everyone on the autistic spectrum can be impacted by simple changes. Also, as a higher education professional, it was especially important to listen to the chapter focusing on that and reminding me why I champion disability advocacy in the first place.

If you walk away with nothing else from this book, this is what stands out to me: Nothing about us, without us. And let people with autism, whatever that looks like for them, speak for themselves.

As a true auti I finished this book in one go. I loved how much information this book contains, although I must say that I skipped the chapter about housing. Because I'm not from the USA and have already read multiple books about marginalized people and housing I felt like that wasn't really what I was looking for at this moment. I think sometimes it was a little bit too in depth in politics and history but I can also really respect the research that was done to write this. I especially loved the chapters about love and gender, although they also made me a bit sad and not really hopeful, but that's not Erics fault. It definitely is an important book about autism and I can't wait to learn more to learn more about the topic.

I think it's a good and insightful book. For me personally it didn't contain much information that I didn't already know, which is perfectly fine. Especially since I am well aware that I have read a lot about autism in the past few years.
