I didn't find this book to be paced particularly well. I thought it was fast in some areas and slow in others. I initially thought that the author may have been projecting some personal feelings within Caroline's chapters, and I felt that Caroline's chapters (as a whole) were just fluff. It didn't feel properly fitted to the story until it got toward the end.

I loved Nella & Eliza's chapters. They felt solid from the beginning. My only gripe with Eliza's chapters is that I couldn't tell if they were being told from her 12yo perspective or her adult perspective. If they were being written from her 12yo perspective, the writing/telling was far too mature.

For some reason the climax felt rushed to me. There was some build up, but I didn't feel like there was a lot there. I really didn't feel properly engaged with the story as a whole until after everything occurred.

Despite really wanting to put it down in the first 30 pages, I'm glad I gave it a shot. The ending was sweet.

Also, the oxford comma wasn't used and it hurt me a bit.

I really enjoyed this a lot. I love the back and forth between 1790 and modern time covering different characters. The couple of plot twists threw me for a loop. I love that this was an easy listen with three different narrators that all did a fantastic job!

This would be a great YA or teen book for someone interested in history, and sisterhood. Not for me though - predictable!

Absolutely beautiful story I suggest every woman read this story at least once!

I really enjoyed most of this book, but the ending was so stupid.
Why would she keep Eliza a secret? Why does it even matter 200 years later? How does that make her a good historian? What is this “special connection” she felt with Eliza? It makes no sense. Also, no one just casually applies to Cambridge and gets in. I’m pretty sure that’s something you have to work for your whole young life.
Its just a lame contrived ending that added nothing to the overall narrative, complicated things for no reason, and ruined the legacy of the 1790s characters.

What a fun fall read! I really enjoyed this one! Spooky, mysterious, and an engaging page turner.

I particularly liked the non linear element of the plot jumping between the past and present. I liked that the ending was happy, in a bittersweet kind of way. Although I do kind of wish that James had ended up poisoning himself to death. It would have been a fitting juxtaposition with the past husbands all dying by poisons dispensed through the apothecary. But I am glad that he did not die, and I am glad that the MC and he decided to separate their marriage without either one of them being villainized. It was very believable and well written.
