This is a fun book to read. It is a relief to get answers after to huge cliffhanger of the previous book in the series.

For the record, my rating is only reflective of the short story and not any of the other bonus content. The short story was split into two POVs: Sophie's and Keefe's. I've been a fan of Dex and Keefe's friendship ever since we saw hints of it developing, and I really enjoyed their scenes together. However, I wasn't a big fan of Sophie's storyline. It seems like Shannon Messenger doesn't want Sophie to ever be wrong, and so I find it frustrating when the narrative frames her recklessness as her making the right choices. She faces a lack of consequences for her irresponsibility and her friends seem like they're in the wrong for disagreeing with her, and when I as a reader also find myself disagreeing with her, it's harder to enjoy the story since the narrative wants us to be on her side.

It's half story companion, half novella. And the novella is GOOD. After so much drag and redundancy in books 7 & 8, the novella is a nice antidote - it moves quick containing only the essentials and is amazing.

Wow. Just wow.

This cliffhanger left me sobbing. I can not believe what happened here and I was not expecting it at all. It left me shaking and sobbing,

I WAS RIGHT AGAIN. Why am I on a roll? Are these twists just kinda predictable? First Oralie, now the polyglot thing. I LOVE Keefe so much. Poor thing. Teenage boy angst. Why is Keefe kind of obsessed with Sophie. I mean, it’s really, really cute. His mind is 90% Sophie and 10% him being a boyfail. Also, why was everybody so mad when Sophie burned down the Neverseen hideout. I get not stooping to their level, but all they’ve proven so far is that they’re lackeys who have no backbone 😭 Also, as if that was the worst plan they have ever come up with. Forkle’s plans were dog. Like actual BS.

“But Sophie called for me. And I came back for her. I’ll always.”

“For a second, Keefe could imagine himself right there beside her, with her head resting gently on his shoulder.”

!!!!!! Just let them be happy. PLEASE
