I usually rush through self help type books. I think I finally found the one that helps that problem. I aspire to live up to the ideals of this book. With every shortcoming in my efforts I encounter more unlearning/ relearning/ discovering/ becoming “work” that needs or doesn't need but would be nice to get done. I think after a couple months of trying I’ll need to reread this. This books helps me discover the way I act calm to ignore and worsen how stressed I am. Don’t act like your doing nothing, do nothing. The social theory is not the singular focus which makes the book as a whole more relevant. It all comes back to Shabbat.

I really was vibing with this book until I got to the “solutions” section. Lots of really good context around hustle culture, and how overworking came to be and how it impacts us. I really resonated with so many of the issues and vices that drive overworking/compulsion to be doing something productive or efficiently, but when I got to the “solutions” section it provided little to no new insight into how to deprogram some of these deeply ingrained behaviors. I’m still giving it 4 stars though because the context it provided into why we overwork really resonated with me and that was the majority of the book. Just would have liked some more insightful solutions.

Great reminder that life is about connection and community and that work/income is just a necessary means to that end. That belonging to each other is what is important.
5.0⭐The Case for Degrowth in Nearly Every Facet of Modern Living
If you're already steeped in anti-capitalism culture, most of these ideas wont be new or necessary, I'd skip it—but if you're a baby rebel, this might rock your worldview.

Anyone who considers themselves, “busy” should read this. While there were some tangents and asides, it was mostly spot on and I’d recommend every working parent pick it up.
