I liked the way this memoir was told. It expressed the sheer loss of life and joy for millions of civilians during the Syrian civil war through the lens of one person's experience, the grief of needless death and the fatigue of unending sieges and refugee migrations, while still being a well paced story and with relief and happiness found in little ways. Ahmad's humility throughout everything was humbling.

I thoroughly enjoyed this memoir of growing up in a Palestinian area of Syria pre-war and surviving the horrors that the uprising and ensuing war brought. Having travelled through Syria before the uprising, it was a sweet reminder of a beautiful country and beautiful people. Unfortunately, it seems the atrocities described in this book are now being repeated in Gaza.

Meine Mutter hat das Buch von einer Veranstaltung mitgebracht, ich habe mir nichts davon erwartet und nur halbherzig irgendwo mittendrin angefangen zu lesen. Es war dann aber doch alles sehr interessant und hat mich auch in der Nichtlesezeit beschäftigt.
