Jhumpa Lahiri's essay, which she presented as a keynote address in 2015, discusses the topic of book covers and how they can appeal in different ways to readers and authors. I tend to be a very visual person, and often the cover of a book will pull me in before I even read a word within its pages. I'm disappointed if the story doesn't live up to the cover art. Lahiri explores this topic from an author's point of view. Picking out a cover is often a task for the editor; covers may differ between different book editions, or they may end up sharing similar or even identical artwork with an unrelated book. Lahiri describes how these changes affect her as an author, and the reader can certainly consider how it affects them as well.

This is a short read, but it packs a lot of thought-provoking ideas on how we connect to books, visually and mentally.

Book #7 Read in 2017
The Clothing of Books by Jhumpa Lahiri

This was a short, quick read. The author describes the role of cover art in the world of reading. Authors are not really involved in creating the cover art for their books but they have very powerful reactions to the cover art that is chosen. It was an interesting perspective. I received a copy of this book from Amazon Vine in exchange for a honest review.

As an author who publishes her own books, I guess I didn't realize the privilege of being able to clothe and identify my own words without considering how others would interpret and visually represent my writing. I agree that there often is too much distraction on most jackets these days - I gloss over blurbs and reviews in my efforts to identify the heart of the book. Not a bad quick read but I'm not sure why this needed to be fully published. It would make a nice article or blog post somewhere.

This book is super meta. I want to like it, but my overall feeling was meh. And there were time where the author sounded like a pretentious artist complaining that no one understands their art. There’s something to what she says about book covers, but it just wasn’t an enjoyable read for me.
