I love murder mysteries, and I liked that this one wasn't scary. (Although those can be good too) I liked the characters and how the story was told from both Brynn and Mia's perspective, both during the current events and the past.
The progression of Summer being portrayed as the perfect girl to her bad sides getting revealed reminds me of A Good Girls Guide to Murder. I was horrified when Summer killed Biscuit, but the reveal at the end about her trying to banish the shadow made it different. Ms Grey as the killer wasn't something that i figured out until a couple sentances before the reveal, when Mia mentioned the purple carnations, but it really works well into the story.
I really liked Lovelorn as a plotline in the story and as a book on its own, as well as the fanfic.

I’m conflicted with this book.

First of all this is one of them books that should really have trigger warnings inside. I’m going to try and list them, but I’m definitely going to end up missing some.

TW: animal cruelty, self harm, drug mentions, suicide, child murder, homophobia (often challenged though), fatphobia (unchallenged), ablest comments in regards to mental health, mentions of pedophilia (no acts or descriptions, more like accusing someone)

The story had promise, but fell short in some places. Sometimes it just didn’t make sense. The story is told through Mia and Brynn’s view points,in both the past and present, as well as through short clips from 2 stories, relating to the plot. There was a lot of jumping about and flicking between everything, that sometimes things just weren’t explained or explored fully.

Mia and Brynn were actually very similar and I sometimes found myself confused between viewpoints. The most interesting character, for me, was Abby.

I guessed the plot twist, but that is something that happens with me fairly often because I just read a lot of these types of books. But the ended fell quite flat. It was over with and that was that for the main plot. The last chapter is how the characters are a few months or so ahead.

The book was quite slow to start with and built up towards the middle, where I ended up reading most of it in a couple of sittings. It did entertain me, but there was just something missing for me to rate this higher.

I also felt like the building romance throughout the book was just there, it was just added in and felt pointless. I wasn’t interested in it, I wasn’t rooting for the characters to get together or anything. It just seemed quite annoying. But that could just be personal preference.
