The story was really cool until it got super smutty and dramatic and then I was like nah. It was giving fanfiction. The lengths taken to fuck were crazy man just give it up.

Still I rate this as it has an interesting discussion around codependency. I wish there were more group therapy or Claire and Lucy scenes and less fish fucking. Change the story centre point!!! I appreciate it shows the extent taken for intimacy but still!!!!

Honestly I did like this book

The dog deserved so much better and I just wish that he didn't die tho. I feel like if he was in a drug coma that would have been effective without his death.

just finished this & i’m still reeling (haha fish joke). obvi lucy sucks and is a mega narcissist codependent weirdo but frankly nothing beyond a 2-thought radius here seemed fleshed out which i think ties back to her inability to pay attention to anything but herself. i love her momentary glimpses into connecting with other people, like feeling bad for the soccer mom & more obviously connecting with Claire only to toss them aside as soon as she finds someone else to throw herself into. Lucy lovessssss to extort comfort out of other people yet never extend them the same grace (Rochelle…. Annika…. Chickenhorse). Theo’s the best part of this book by a long shot, dude is so dramatic. RIP Dominic, you would’ve loved seeing Lucy drown </3

Gross. Frustrating. I could not relate to the characters at all. Clearly not for me.

You know, sometimes you gotta question how fucked up an author is to be able to depict such deplorable characters… Where is this inspiration drawn from? How can our main character, Lucy, have so much sympathy and pity for herself, yet shows ZERO remorse for her actions and the people (and dog) she’s hurt.

The beginning of the book was intermittently relatable, but the remaining 80% was incredibly painful and laborious to trudge through. If you are into characters with less compassion than serial killers, dive right in! I absolutely LOVE the lack of self awareness Lucy exhibits.
”Oh, my mermaid boyfriend wants me to drown for him? No way!! That takes away my autonomy!! But I ABSOLUTELY have every right to repeatedly over-drug a dog that is not mine to the point of FATALITY so I can see my shitty, potentially illusory mermaid boyfriend :))
Yay!! Girlboss slay!!” I’d say grow the fuck up, but I know this character is too self-centered and dimwitted for that to be possible.

Also, what the fuck is up with the numerous disgustingly unsexy sex scenes and ill-placed sexual metaphors??? It’s reminiscent of everything that is wrong with try-hard avant garde writers (take Lena Dunham for example).

Would not recommend unless you want to make your day worse. I have never said this about a book before, but I truly wish I could get the time back that I spent reading this shit show.
