Despite liking the plot and the characters, it felt tedious at points but at other times I would have liked more thoroughness.

I read Ng's first book and enjoyed it. This book, not so much. The characters were good, but there were too many unanswered questions. This book was written in an almost "stream of consciousness" way, which irked me. Often, she moved from one character's third person viewpoint to another in one paragraph. I'd have to think to myself, "whose story is this now?" There are other gripes that have to do with how she wove in a roadmap to the "cage" and the "freedom." Everyone has things they regret in life. We all have paths we choose. There too many "coincidences" in this book as well. I would read Ng again, however.

I absolutely loved this book. Ng’s writing style is 100% my cup of tea. I wanted this to be a 5 star read, but I think the Bebe Chow subplot was just a tad too long.
