Adina Gewirtz

3.57 AVERAGE

3.5 actual.

This is a beautifully quiet story about Annie, an eleven-year-old girl who lives with her younger brother Rew and her Gran. Her mother abandoned her and her brother when they were babies, and her father died in a fight. One day, an escapee from a local prison breaks into her home and holds her family hostage.

I really admired Gewirtz's way with quiet emotion. Not a lot "happens" in this story but it's very rich. There were a few aspects that I thought were trying too hard - Treasure Island plays a large, reoccurring part and I think it was supposed to be representative of a whole bunch of stuff that I just didn't pick up on. I could have done without it.

My biggest stumbling point, and the major reason this didn't hit four stars, is that, as a bookseller, I'm not sure who I would sell it to. It's a little young for YA, and a little steep for middle. I guess I would say 11 or 12+ if it came down to it, but I'm really not certain. In a weird way, it might be best suited to adults.
