A moving story of a damaged man and a snow goose, and their heroic rescue efforts at Dunkirk. Simple, short, but inspiring.

I thought I knew the story of The Snow Goose but this was a beautiful retelling of the classic. Philip Rhayader has withdrawn from society because of his physical appearance and lives in an abandoned lighthouse, painting and caring for the wild birds on the Essex marshes. A young girl, Frith, brings him an injured snow goose, and they care for it together. Rhayader has never received any warmth or care from fellow humans due to his physical deformity, but he answers the call for boats to rescue stranded Allied soldiers on Dunkirk beach. This is a lovely, if a melancholy story about humanity, made even better with audio narration by Ralph Cosham.
“Men are huddled on the beaches like hunted birds, Frith, like the wounded and hunted birds we used to find and bring to sanctuary. They need help, my dear, as our wild creatures have needed help, and that is why I must go. It is something that I can do. Yes, I can. For once – for once I can be a man and play my part.”

I remember liking this book very much, though I cannot quite remember the story (I should read it again at some point). It made me an instant fan of Paul Gallico.

August 2012: read the story again after several years and the effect has been the same. Gallico is a great narrator of simple lyrical stories.

Short and, well, not so sweet, but I can see why it was recommended to me and that's all that counts.
