I've finally got around to reading a few of the Big Nate books and am going to review them together with one review. My biggest sticking point is that I don't particularly like Nate. He's a bit of a jerk. I get not every kid likes school, or likes his teachers, but Nate really goes over the top in his disdain for school and for adults that never seems to go away. I have a problem with that. While it's not up my alley, I can see why this would be a book that middle school students would enjoy and I can think of several students who might like the series.

Perhaps in rebellion of that anti-YA online article, I went even younger. I am spiteful.

These books really are super adorable, and fun fast reads.

The book starts with Nate at odds with one of his best friends, Teddy. It seems that Nate actually did his homework for once but he left it at Teddy's. But Teddy spilled syrup on the outline and then tried to wash it off which resulted in the paper disintegrating. And that sends him off on another series of linked adventures.
Interestingly, this book has a slightly different origin story for Nate's band, "Enslave the Mollusk," than the comics. But the problem with the band in this book is that Nate has accidentally offended leader singer Artur the day before they're supposed to play for the whole school.
Then there's the lucky foot that Chad found means that the boys don't have to jazzercise, take a pop quiz, and that Nate finds a special necklace. He also starts setting trends like decorating his shoes and getting kids to hit their heads with empty bottles. Too bad Mrs. Godfrey takes it away from him right before Field Day.

This was so funny. And I'm having trouble getting over the fact that Nate hits himself in the head with an empty bottle. That's just so...I don't know!

Short but fun read. I like these characters.
