It was very well written but incredibly triggering for me. It is not an anthology for the light hearted.

Retelling of short stories showing women's perspectives is always something I will be all about.

SHAFT OF LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT

The author does not allow you to turn away from the violence and despair of these familiar stories. I was continually stunned by the flourish, speechless by the end. Highly recommend. Warning for (what I consider) graphic violence, particularly sexual violence. If you’ve read metamorphoses you know the stories, MacLaughlin simply expresses the viewpoint of the women (often victims) whose despair Ovid glossed over or ignored entirely. I found Myrrha to be highly disturbing and had trouble getting through this chapter, just a heads up.

This was an mixed bag of emotions for me.
MacLaughlin writes these from the pov of the female characters based on Ovid's Metamorphosis and gives them voices where some women had none, expands on the the few that did, and fleshes out the characterizations of them all.

Each story is vibrant in it's own way, each with a different tone and voice that gives each women a distinct voice and way of telling her story. So much emotion comes through and in such a range too!

I see the attempt of this book to bring untold stories to the forefront but I doubt readers will need to listen to 32-some ways a woman can be violated in order to understand that female characters/people in Greek mythology (and beyond) were treated incredibly poorly. The language and writing style was eloquent but trigger warnings are needed for every page of this book.

A gift best given to a misogynist perhaps. Didn’t hold much enlightenment for me personally as a feminist.

To be honest if I had read the content warnings on this I probably wouldnt have picked it up, so read at your own discretion BUT, I did still think it was really good. Some of the stories I didn't really vibe with stylistically but I think the author did a fantastic job giving each character their own voice and making it feel like you're just listening to a friend tell a story. Overall glad to have read it and thought it was really well done even if I wouldn't pick it up again
