Slow paced, easy read, informative from the POV of a woman who has schizophrenia. Good if you want to learn more about the individual’s POV from psychiatric disorders rather than clinical/textbook POV. The way she incorporated family members, friends, and healthcare professionals perspective was interesting. Too slow for my liking.

I originally rated this memoir 4 stars, but I think I'm going to update it to 5 stars. This was such an interesting read, I wanted to finish it in one sitting but that wasn't possible with my schedule lol. I'm glad that other people in Lori's life got to have their own chapters in the book to tell their perspective of how Lori's mental struggles affected their lives as well. (Personally I enjoy when their are multiple POV's in books). This didn't take place that long ago however it's hard to imagine how at this time mental health issues were not seen as 'okay' and 'normalized' as they are today (most of the time).

Hearing from the family again and again in this co-written account of Lori Schiller's experience with schizophrenia was nauseating. At one point her parents both agree that she is better off dead. As a person who has dealt with the diagnosis personally... what self-serving bullshit, especially after their having detailed their being in denial for some time about Lori's mental health issues. It's like telling someone dealing with cancer or a long-term illness that they're better off dead because life is currently shit. When you already want to kill yourself that negative energy needs to stay far away.
The implication is that not 'triumphing' over schizophrenia = better off dead.
The fatphobia from both Lori and her family was persistent and got tiring after a while.
