Basic plot summary: Xingyin is the daughter of the moon goddess, Chang’e, and she loves her mother so much. One day, Xingyin is force to flee her home, leaving her mother behind in her lunar prison. From there on out, Xingyin’s main goal is to find a way to free her mother from her prison, getting into shenanigans aplenty along the way (when I say shenanigans I mean feats of bravery and courage/life threatening adventures).

I don’t know if I’ve ever been so enchanted by a book. It was recommended to me by local bookseller friend/college roommate and I bought it because the cover was beautiful (I’m a simple creature). I read it because it’s the least dark book on my current physical TBR, and I needed a break after reading a couple of books that made me think a little too hard about life. And I’m so glad I gave it a chance. While I will go on to recommend this book to everyone who will listen to me, I don’t think it will be everyone’s cup of tea. It’s a journey and not everyone wants to go for the ride. There’s a lot of sub-plots that all directly work towards the main plot, but it’s easy to forget that after the fifth or sixth side quest that may or may not actually advance my new favorite character Xingyin towards her goal. But the journey was so beautiful and atmospheric. And call me a teenager in the early 2010s, but I love me a good love triangle and a girl who’s unaware everyone is in love with her. Anyway, immaculate work of fiction.

I'm slightly disappointed because this book came so highly recommended. The setting of it is beautiful. But the story kind of dragged on in some moments, while others felt too fast paced. Also, there's nothing I like less than a love triangle, soooo... It's not a bad book by any means, I'm just not the audience for it.

The prose were very beautiful. And I found the plot fascinating.
A few problems I had.
1. It took me a bit to get used to the tense used. Its first person past tense. And for whatever reason that took me a minute to get into.
2. The villain reveal at the end felt like it came out of no where. I did not like who was the villain. It did not feel foreshadowed in the slightest.
But overal I had a really good time. The journey that the charter went on was very I treating and the ending was perfectly satisfying. And the MC is a really good character and what is happening around her changes her and helps her grow.
I really enjoyed this book.
If you liked this book I would recommend cinders of glass by Celeste baxendell. I think that they have similar character development.
Also a random side note. The word crimson was used a lot.
