THE PLOT

Lacey Flint is back in uniform, this time with the "river police." When she finds a dead body shrouded in linen, she inadvertently ends up assisting her old pals at the Met with a complicated case.

MY OPINION

I read this right after book #1 and I'm glad. I think if I took time between the two books, I would've been confused by the several references to events in book #1. The downside however, is that book #1 blew this one outta the water (pun very much intended).

I love Bolton's books because they're so unique. I always learn something new, but she writes it in such a natural way that it doesn't come across like info-dumping or like you're reading a wikipedia page. You can tell she does her research and checks that her t's are crossed and her i's dotted—no "hair attached to a 40 yr old skull" boo boo here (AHEM...)

This was a meh read because Lacey was going full detective dumbass for most of it. And the whole crime could've been solved by simply installing security cameras. So yeah.

SPOILER ALERRTTTTT SCROLL FURIOUSLY TO THE BOTTOM IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS YET

Re: Lacey being detective dumbass... Oh you're looking for girls who received medical attention and are being stored by the river... well quelle surprise the perpetrators are the twinsies you met living by the river, one of which is a doctor. C'mon girl lmao. Lacey must be colour blind because she couldn't see a red flag for shit.

I got an ick from the repeated mentions of "Bollywood tan"—this wording did NOT age well although it was expired to begin with tbh. Also... if Pashtun are described as pale and white-passing (excuse me if this is not the correct term) why did Lacey need a tan? Confusion.

ANYWAYS. I'm a #boltonbish so I still found this an enjoyable and educational read. 6 more days until The Dark comes out!!!!!

PROS AND CONS

Pros: interesting premise, the ending held its shit together (Bolton's endings can go off the deep end sometimes), some Joesbury and Lacey action to quench my illogical thirst for their romance

Cons: Lacey was obtuse as she was in book #2, some of the math did not mathulate, major icks around the undercover scene with Lacey... nah bruv

My Rating: 4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ rounded up from 3.5 liked it only slightly less than the others!!!

Lacey lives and works on the Thames, which is a dangerous place that she has so far been lucky to escape its clutches. While trying to live the quiet life as a River Officer, Lacey finds a dead body while she is off duty.

Who is the dead woman and why is she wrapped in white burial cloths.

DCI Dana Tulloch hates to admit it but shes fond of Lacey, even if she is reckless and a constant meddler. Dana has some terrible news to break to Lacey, some that could cause irreparable damage.

Ok, this book wasn’t as strong as the others… I felt like there were some plot holes and things that are mentioned in the synopsis that are not tied up… however does that stop me enjoying it… HELL NO and will it stop me continuing the series…well I am already on book 5 so nahhh.

The sheer amount of mentions the River Thames received in this book was like it was a character of its own.. now I know I think its supposed to come across that way… but guys its a river. And seriously there is so many times we are told there is garbage in there it sounds like a shit river as well… now I get it its the Thames its famous but sheesh ease up with the river references.

Lacey is also living on the river these days in her houseboat… girl needs some security because she is being stalked and things are being left up on her deck and inside her cabin and she doesn’t think maybe she needs some new locks, a camera or perhaps a guard dog… or girl just move into an apartment instead of a dodgy houseboat… but hey what do I know.

She is also a bit of a dumbass cause shes swimming in the river too… and I mean gross… but whatever lets not get into it. Lacey comes across some rando house upstream after finding her first dead body and she decides hang on… let me just get out and have some afternoon tea with these strangers… that always goes well… WTF!! Now does that seem weird to anyone else… turns out this lotions and potions loving old lady is really sweet… or is she dun dun dunnnnnnn I mean its up to you to read it.

Anyway I am not going to get into full on spoilers but the storyline was a little bit disjointed for me, the baddie was not as rewarding as I would have liked and there were a little bit too much going on… having said that I did still power through it and have given it four stars so I don’t not recommend it… for me its just the weakest one I have read so far plot wise.

There were also some problematic terms and phrases used and the amount of times skin colour is referred to in I would say a casually racist way was a bit alarming but I don’t think it was intended to be disrespectful. I wouldn’t like to see this being written like this in 2023 though the terms didn’t age well.

The writing aside from the above is spot on… the ending goes a bit bananas Sharon Bolton styles but all in all its a really good read and you get a bit of this and that. You also get a bit more of Dana and her partner Helen which I quite liked.

Aside from constantly screaming at my kindle at point blank range KISS RIGHT NOW!!!! To Lacey and Mark… that was about the end of it.

Overall I would recommend it, I don’t think you should skip it when you are reading the series its a good addition just not her best one.

Definitely an interesting story as far as mysteries. I wanted more romance, but also appreciate a tease.

An excellent Lacey Flint novel. I like the cheeky comments the characters make and the broadening of Dana's storyline.

Piekne widoki londynu, lecz zarazem ciemne uliczki, brudny prąd tamizy. Cudowna intrygująca niesamowita.

A Dark and Twisted Tide (Lacey Flint #4) by S. J. Bolton is a mysterious and compelling crime novel series. 3.5 Stars

London police officer, Lacey Flint is recovering since her last near fatal adventure, recently transferred to the Marine’s Unit patrolling River Thames, and living on a houseboat moored in Deptford Creek while taking up the highly dangerous illegal wild river-swimming.

Now she discovers the first of several bodies near the houseboat, knowing this is a dangerous place and she chooses to live on the water, to escape the horrors of her past.

DI Dana Tulloch heads up the case, and was formerly Lacey’s boss when Lacey was a detective. A string of bad cases has forced Lacey to return to her uniform to help investigate. When the evidence suggests the drowning victim was a young woman, Lacey goes undercover to try and flush out the sex traffickers.

To further complicate matters, her lover, Detective Mark Joesbury has disappeared on an undercover job and she finds herself immersed in this dangerous hunt for a possible serial killer targeting illegal Afghan immigrants. Even though Mark has made a few surprise visits to the houseboat; however, she suspects someone else is visiting leaving her threatening messages.

I have not read the other previous books in the series; however, found Bolton’s writing fast-paced with twists and turns you do not see coming for a suspense mystery with some interesting secondary characters.

I enjoyed Lacey’s fascinating character with a troubled past, yet hanging in there to get the job done and earning the respect of those around here.

I look forward to reading the previous books in the series to learn more about the background of the characters. I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Lisa Coleman which fit the description ideally, with her engaging British accent.

Ah, finally a mystery I can be rate well.

What a cast of characters! Even though I was terribly disappointed by the ending, it was good, and a good mystery. I clued in earlier than I would like, but then was pleasantly surprised when I was wrong.

Lesbians, criminal masterminds, female serial killers, egg-thieves, salty water cops, the Thames, it was all just so interesting.

Already starting the next one

Het duurde even voordat ik in het boek kwam. Had nog niet eerder een Lacey Flint thriller gelezen. Desondanks goed te lezen. Onverwachts einde, altijd goed.

3 1/2. I think I'm getting a little bored of the Lacy Flint formula. It was a quick read, but somewhat disappointing ending.
