Excellent! My first book by Chuck Tingle. I only know him by reputation, and I'm not sure what I expected exactly, but those expectations were definitely exceeded. The reason I'm rating it so low (not that 4 stars is low, really) is I wanted more background/flashbacks once we find out what's really happening to Rose. I wanted more of her history and memories. There's a reason those things are hidden from us, it makes sense for the plot to move forward, but I wanted more. This is just what I needed to reset my brain. <3

Pacing was so so so very bad. Let me tell it like this ... at 60 pages into a 250 page book nothing had happened, no scenes set and a very bland introduction or a bland character and a bland world - with a novella like this I can anticipate one of two things: 1) nothing continues to happen (instant DNF) or 2) everything will happen at once for no reason (instant DNF). I didn't find Rose compelling and it felt like the Catholic elements were ... contrived a bit.

Some books i hate so much I finish them just so I can write a review and justify my hatred. If I try and review a book I didn't finish folks will say "but you didnt read the end? How can you evaluate the whole thing?" Well, I don't give a shit about finding about the ending.  This one I can feel is a waste of my interests al ready, and so I an giving it my first DNF of 2024 - despite being on the library hold list for 3 months for it).

So my advice to a interested reader is uhhhh good luck, I guess?

Juxtaposes the horror of conversion camps with the horror of an alien invasion. Very creative and suspenseful, and surprisingly optimistic ending given the genre/tone
