(As for the book…Virginia Woolf elegantly writes a trans tale with British dry humor and a sprinkle of magical realism. It’s pretty fab!)

A lot going on here, but I am positively obsessed with Woolf's care for the ordinary. The incredible affection and care for common things—the blue tint of a fly, a young man's fine calves, a home that is no longer yours—foreground the novel, the extraordinary and the immortal all afterthoughts to the celebration of the mundane and the mortal. Even the voice of 'a biography' is retuned and recalibrated for this purpose: the extraordinary is below mentioning; only the small pleasures are expounded, only the common features of Orlando's life ever clearly in view. Nothing else is relevant.

Woolf summarizes it better than I ever could: "when the shriveled skin of the ordinary is stuffed out with meaning, it satisfies the senses amazingly." Beautiful prose. Can't wait to dive into Woolf's other works.
