This book is brutal. There is no happiness, no joy, no hope, just loneliness and heartbreak. Everything that could go wrong in a persons life does but it is written in such a beautiful and interesting way that you are forced to put yourself through the pain page after page.
It is a lit-fic in the truest sense, following Cassie as a child into later adulthood so some parts can drag a bit. Still with the way the book was written in short paragraphs it was a breeze to read.
I highly recommend if you are looking for a new perspective on life and good writing, however definitely check trigger warnings and put your mental health first before going into this one.

This book reads like a work of art and a fever dream all rolled into one; I truly couldn't put it down. Etter paints a surreal and unforgiving portrait of societal treatment towards unruly bodies, so much so, the familiarity will twist your insides and make you ache. The writing is beautiful—rich and intoxicating, marbled with fat, bloody and fierce. It touches on a sense of longing buried deep in every reader.

Note to self: reread this book someday, preferably with others. My thoughts are nebulous overall, but I think you (whoever you are) should read it. Truly, a stunningly thought-provoking story.

This book is fucking weird and grotesque. And extraordinary.
Cassie was born with her stomach twisted into a knot, like her mother and her grandmother. We follow Cassie from childhood on her family's meat quarry through adulthood in the big city, and then in her country home. She navigates loneliness, isolation, trauma, and living in her body. Ms. Etter created a surreal and imaginative world. The book is also written in a unique way. The main story is told through brief vignettes. Interspersed throughout are lists of related facts, and Cassie's visions of a different life for herself that's sometimes more fucked up than her reality (rivers of thighs, a man store...) While the story is weird so much of how she tries to find love, figure out her identity and her place in the world are so relatable. The prose is gorgeous; I marked so many sentences. I'm excited to read more from Sarah Rose Etter!!

It was too gory for me unfortunately 😫 I think I will go read the synopsis to see where it goes though, because the girl was intriguing. Sorry!
Graphic: Body horror, Bullying, Gore, Dysphoria
