I started listening to this not knowing what to expect other than the obvious - Zombies would probably turn up at some point. Imagine my surprise when I found myself snorting with laughter and tearing up and just being INTO this story. Really a good listen! I will be looking for the other books in this series.

At first I thought this was too silly to be enjoyable. I kept reading anyway and ended up liking it. There were parts that were long winded with lots of backstory and not much action. I may pick up book 2 at some point but an 18 (actually now 23) book series is a big commitment. And, it seems like zombie stories never really get wrapped up.
Edited to add: Reread this prior to starting book 2. I must have used a lot of brain bleach after book 1 because I forgot some of the horrific, disturbing things-beyond the usual killing of zombies.

A zombie novel with the added twist of a vampire bitten by a zombie. She then controls the zombies to attack the humans.

Zombie fiction is my not-so-secret personal addiction. I gobble this stuff up.
Zombie Fallout is a slight deviation from the tone taken by most other authors when attacking this genre. As I got further and further into the book the thought came to me that if I were to write a zombie novel, it would read very similar to this one. However, that's not all good news. While Zombie Fallout is refreshingly original in the wake of apocalyptic stories, it suffers from the very things that make it fun and entertaining. Mark Tufo's use of humor (which is essentially articulate fart jokes) doesn't ever tone itself back - even when the scene requires intense emotional investment.
I extremely enjoyed his lighthearted take at times but at other times it was obnoxious and stole precious scenes away from the story. No one is going to be concerned about the cosmetic damage to their drywall when a zombie is breaking its way into their house. His corny humor often took away from the drama that was being unfolded - which is unfortunate because the story itself was actually really smart and exciting if the humor would have been cut back enough to be less of a distraction.
The truth is, Zombie Fallout is actually one of the better pieces of zombie fiction out there and I'll even admit that I laughed out loud at times with Mark Tufo's man-cave humor. What downgraded this book from a 4-star to a 3-star read was that by the end I was glad that I was done reading it. I am conflicted in my opinion on it overall because there was so much that was good about the novel, yet one small aspect of it ruined my overall experience.
This is one of those cases where I will likely read the second book in the series just to see if Mark Tufo managed to focus in on the story and tone back the banterous humor.

What the heck did the epilogue have to do with anything? Regardless, this is one of my favored zombie novels as its focus is more on humor than anything else.. and I almost don't care that the main mystery in the story was never explained.. (Unfortunately, and I keep trying, it turns out that I don't enjoy zombie novels.)
