I absolutely loved the humor in this book (esp the dark flavored variety). It was sewn in well to help break up the emotional stuff (and was very much appreciated). Here’s an example that made me cackle:

This brunette girl, mad pretty, is bawling when a guy advances on her with some tired-ass pickup line (“Maybe you’ll live to see another day with some Vitamin Me in your system.”)

As a person with a monster truck of anxiety, I very much related to Matteo. Most of the passages I highlighted to save are from his POV. I enjoyed watching him as the story progressed.

The only complaint I can think of is my disappointment that Final Destination was not mentioned ONCE during this entire book, when it had been set up so perfectly so many times. But as I was writing this I had the panicky thought that kids today might not even know what that movie is, which is horrifying

I know there’s a prequel that came after this, and just discovered there’s a book 2 coming out next year. I obviously don’t know what happens in those so I don’t know if this gets answered, but I want another book to come out where you find out there’s some big nefarious conspiracy to how Death-Cast got started, and how people deal with finding it out/having to get it shut down/something like that. Buuut that’s my love of ominous horror/thrillers bleeding into this world lol

I had a lot of hope for this book as the world was nicely set up and interesting, but I struggled to connect to the characters and everything felt like set up for a later event. The book has a lot of good ideas, but I think it was too ambitious and didn't do much with them because it was trying to handle too much. I would have preferred it if it had been pared down to be a story about these two and how they navigate their feelings about their impending deaths, but we got to hear the thoughts of everyone who came across them and how they changed their lives forever and in some cases how they didn't. One of the most egregious examples had a women see them having a good time on their final day and decide not to commit suicide...

this was such a beautiful story and so heartbreaking... I wish they didn't die at the end but I know it needed to happen... Mateo will forever be my sunshine <3

I was blown away by this book. At first I struggled a bit with suspension of disbelief  when it came to accepting the premise of  infallible death date prediction. Since everything else about the book’s setting was so true to reality it felt extra implausible to imagine that kind of certainty. But once I stopped trying to argue with the premise, the characters and the journey of their last day was so compelling I couldn’t put it down.

I highly recommend listening to the audiobook. The performances are masterful and really bring the characters to life.

Idk.. the use of the phrase “mad” by Rufus was getting on my nerves “she was mad pretty, he was mad tired, that was mad crazy” but then the same teenager uses the word “midriff” when describing where he wraps his legs on the monkey bars?? 🙄 come on lol… I feel like it was pretty superficial for most of the book until about the last 50 pages when it got a bit more gripping. It’s pretty forgettable overall.
