"To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that's all."--Oscar Wilde
They Both Die at the End by Damn Silvera wrecked me. If you're looking for a book that is going to rip out your heart over and over again, this is it. I was crying 60 pages in and I'm pretty sure I just continuously cried for the last 60 pages as well.
In the world Silvera has created, there is a "service" (more like disservice--amiright!) called Death-Cast that calls you to let you know that within 24 hours you will meet an untimely death. The thought behind Death-Cast is that if you know you will die in 24 hours you can make the most of your last day on Earth.
We follow Mateo and Rufus, 18 and 17 respectively, who have received the Alert. Mateo is quiet, shy, and an anxious little cinnamon bun that needs to be protected, while Rufus seems to be a troubled foster care kid, who we first meet beating the absolute shit out of someone. The two connect over the LastFriend app, a place where lonely Deckers (people who have received the D-C call) can find a friend on their last day.
Other stories also interconnect with Mateo and Rufus. I loved how the author introduced different characters and had them all loosely connected to each other in some way.
I felt like this was a commentary on how social media plays a role in whether we actually live our lives or watch it happening to other people. It's also a commentary on not just being alive, but actively living.
It was beautiful to see Mateo and Rufus's relationship evolve over the course of 24 hours. Even though I knew they would both die at the end (I mean, it is the title) it was still a punch in the gut, because you want to badly for them both to be able to grow up and figure what they have together. A common theme in this book was wishing for more time and the importance of not wasting time.
Don't wait to do your bucket list, do it now while you're still living. Although I sobbed for most of this book, I would be interested in reading more Adam Silvera books, for when I need a good cry.
Moderate: Death, Suicide, Violence, Death of parent, and Grief
