Another wonderful book, again dealing with those still wounded by the First World War, this time not only with physical ailments but also mental ailments. A madman is threatening to set off poison gas in London: his demands are for better pensions and care for the war wounded: including those who were under-counted because of the government's fear of liability for "shell-shock."

Maisie is forced to work with a team this time: she is seconded to the Special Branch. She doesn't care for the representative from the MI5, but in the end they manage to save London - though not change the plight of the nation's veterans during the Great Depression.

One of the best bits is a small note about her father's concern for her: Maisie herself is one of the war-traumatized, and her only remaining family member is well-aware of her remaining scars, and how easily they could open again.

3 1/2 stars. I didn't find this as strong as others in the series, though it was a pleasure revisiting Maisie and the other characters.
