This might be a great book for some people. But it was a struggle for me to read from page 1 and I actually regret spending the time to finish it. It’s a hugely ambitious story and the author uses repetitive writing and unnecessary simile to put you in the world she describes. The details are extremely well researched. It could be compared to East of Eden except Steinbeck had enough plot points to keep it interesting, and Eden’s writing is an order of magnitude better. I expected a slow, thoughtful book which would make me reflect on the characters experiences and the societal events that brought them about. Instead I got a slow book. I wish I had read about 4 pages of Wikipedia on the events instead.
Again, I think other people might really love this book. It’s probably being touted in book clubs around the world. I would just warn future readers that if it doesn’t hook you in the first 50 pages, don’t be afraid to abandon ship.
