I read this volume 3 months ago and I am still emotional. I'm going to try to keep it vague, but. God. We all know by now, right???
The Big Event™ that happens in this volume was spoiled so fucking heavily on tumblr, that after months of the knowledge gnawing at me, I finally decided to read the manga and get caught up because i needed to just stop thinking about it so much. So I went into this entire series from page one (and somewhere in the middle of the Shibuya arc in the anime) already having that panel in chapter 236 burned into my fucking brain. The anxiety that I felt as I inched closer and closer to this point...ugh.
Anyway. Deep breath. Let's get into it.
This fight is a lot. There is so much, "He shouldn't be able to do that," "How is he able to do that," but considering these are the strongest current sorcerer against the strongest sorcerer of all time, it makes sense that they are not only adapting in real-time to the attacks of the others, but that they have some aces up their sleeves. When it comes to just making random fights seem interesting, I grow tired of this as a storytelling device *cough*CullingGameArc*cough* but in this case, it only ramps the fight up and up and up to terrifying new heights.
The final chapter of this volume is so hard-hitting, it takes my breath away. Even knowing how it would end, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of loss.Gojo was gone for so long in the prison realm, and then returns for one cataclysmic fight, only to be killed. It felt unfair, in a way, but I respect Gege's choice. He really knows how to break someone's heart.
5 stars because even though crimes were committed (the end of chapter 235 giving false hope??? HELLO???) the writing was so moving, and I just loved the art, and the movement, and the chaos. Everything Jujustu Kaisen is culminates into something beautiful and harrowing in this volume. Chapter 236 was really incredible, and it was nice to see some of the old faces again. The dialogue ripped my heart open. Even writing this review months later has made me begin to sob.
Bravo, Gege. See you eventually in volume 27. 💔
