Don’t be afraid to read this epic tale, it’s so entertaining and enjoyable ( not so much for Odysseus though.. )

I’m not usually one to write reviews, but this book has reignited a feeling in me that I haven’t felt since I first read the Percy Jackson series in elementary school!
Being honest, I am more of a fan of contemporary ‘canon’ literature due to my struggle in comprehending earlier English languages. However, Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey makes the epic poem sound like it was written for today’s society, which worked great for me. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Wilson’s introduction as it refreshed my basic knowledge of Greek mythology and set me up to start the poem. After, I couldn’t stop annotating the poem for commentary on feminism, colonialism, immigration, and ideas of what home and hospitality mean (and similes of course)!
I also used the audiobook, narrated by Clare Danes, to supplement my reading, which assisted the flow of the whole work to sound like a song. Between Emily Wilson’s translated language and Danes’ poetic voice, The Odyssey was a fun read (and I was intimidated before). This translation provided me room as the reader to sit, question, contemplate, and leave Homer’s poem understanding, yet still querying this work's place in the canon. Now, I am off to read more Greek mythology!
*I am no classicist obviously, but I am a prospective English educator who feels less overwhelmed by the idea of one day teaching The Odyssey
