Odyssee

Don't yell at me, but I actually like the Odyssey. I think it's useful, especially to cause people to think critically and with reason. It takes a lot to convince people to sympathize with Odysseus. He is not naturally "likeable," I agree. In fact, I straight up hated him for most of the book and wrote half an essay on why he isn't a real hero. See? Teaching moment because of my strong feelings for the book. I was also into this book to see how Fagles chose to translate the female characters. Hint: they don't get credit for anything. I'm writing my actual essay on that. Wish me luck!

I was forewarned this would be complicated/confusing.. it just isn’t. Enjoyed it more than I anticipated. The storytelling utilises a lot of repetition which can be frustrating but at its core it’s a simple yet enjoyable adventure about family and the gods.

i read this for class so i didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as i could have. i still did get it, and took away many cool things. i would like to read it again later in life, perhaps with a different translation.

This was my second time reading The Odyssey, and wow. As someone already obsessed with Greek mythology, I found Emily Wilson's translation incredibly captivating and immersive. Her writing is vivid, clear, and brings so much life to this classic epic, making it easy to understand and connect with. It was deeply satisfying to see how she brings the story to life in a way that's both fresh and easy to follow.
The intro was also a great addition—it provided historical and cultural context I hadn't fully considered before.
Overall, an amazing translation—totally gripping.
