Do you know what? I think this man can write.
I had a great time with this one. If you liked the original trilogy, but want a little bit more plot... this trilogy might be for you.
Abercrombie's character work is one of his strongest suits. That remains true in this book as much as any of the others. We have all new POV characters, all of whom are descendants of characters in the original trilogy or great leveller books. Each showing traits from their parents, combined with their upbringing, making them realistic and enjoyable in equal measure. Through this we also get recurring characters from previous books. Seeing them through someone else's eyes, seeing what they have become... all wonderfully handled.
This book, as mentioned, has actually got a really sound plot from the get go. We do have a warm up but not a whole book and a half. We have a revolution happening (akin to the Industrial Revolution) and we have the proletariats beginning to rise up. With all of our characters being in a position of privilege, it makes for very dramatic (and morally compromising) stakes.
We do have recurring issues like wars and conflicts but the primary conflict of this one is the class divide. I liked the way we go about it and discussing a revolution and class divide in a world so morally corrupt and with characters who are not completely morally sound is a great portrayal.
Abercombie's signature nihilistic, dry humour is back, as is is witty and snappy prose which carries you through these turbulent times with a balance of the darkness we witness and the levity with which it is told.
Overall this was a great addition to the First Law World.

Splendid story, good characters, generally quite enjoyed this one. Every character somewhat surprised me with their direction and how intresting I found them to be.
