We are back in the world of Logen Nine-Fingers and Sand dan Glokta, but this book is about the next generation. In fact, Glokta's daughter Savine is one of the main characters. So is Jezal's son the Crown Prince Orso, Sandine dan Brock's son Leo, and the Dogman's daughter Rikke. There's also a spy/inquisitor named Vick, a washed up northern barbarian named Clover, and a damaged and dangerous ex-soldier named Gunnar Broad.

This book explores how change creates both opportunity and destruction. The North's uneasy peace is being disrupted by a young warrior who wants glory and who is opposed by another youngblood who wants to make a name for himself on the Empire's side. The merchant class is on the rise along with technologies related to manufacturing, and many people are out of work in the country and exploited in horrible working conditions in the city. Those who have haven't yet learned that the have nots have a breaking point, and that point will not be pretty for the people who have benefited from society's injustices. Makes me wonder how far we are from that today. Savine dan Glokta is a young lady who is interested in money and status and likes to think that she's hard and ruthless enough to survive anything. That idea gets tested in this book, and I've got a feeling that it will be tested again.

This wasn't my favorite Abercrombie book. It's hard to read about the children who have benefited from the exploits of the previous trilogy's characters and attach to them in the same way. While I'm interested in this new generation, I can't care about them too much yet. However, I still read breathlessly as a village exploded into rebellion and as a duel decided the fate of the North. I have pity for damaged Gunnar but know that he's going to hurt quite a few people before this series is over. A lot is going to get turned on its head in this series. Abercrombie is pitilessly accurate in his descriptions of the horrid conditions that mill workers had to endure, and that's hard to read, because there are places in the world today where the same conditions exist, and I benefit from them. I'm one of those who have benefited from the injustices of the world, and I don't know what that makes me.

I’m so stupid and like these so much

I’m conflicted. I love this world and the building of lore and the constant introduction of new characters into it. But I wanted more from the characters I loved before! I felt as if there were story lines unfinished such as the war in the south! However, this book comes in strong with the development of the Industrial Revolution and the next generation taking up the mantle of the one prior. It introduces a whole cast of new characters I love to hate just like the first trilogy. And maybe that means that, just like the first trilogy, every subsequent entry will be better than the last as the world grows.
