A book that takes a lot of inspiration for a game of thrones. Similar gritty, dark setting, single combat, incest (a true GOT classic) even many of the characters feel pretty similar. But the politics aren't as good and I found a lot of the narrators pretty annoying. There's also a lot of annoying and unremarkable names that make it hard to remember who is who, and I felt like it took a long time for me to understand who was on whose side. I liked the fantasy setting with some industrial revolution stuff, and the battles, and the villains. But I thought it was sometimes a little too grimdark and witty for it's own good. Also I don't know why every character is some nymphomaniac who instantly bangs everyone they meet. I will briefly rank the narrators as I am prone to doing:

1. Orso the crown Prince is a little dopey but kind of has theon energy, except in a good way. Charismatic without being annoying. Good arc that leaves you wondering where he is going next.
2. Savine is cool in a ruthless way even if "dan glokta" is a stupid last name. Generally a good person who turns a blind eye to the evils of the world that make her money until she is thrust in that position. Then she forgets about it again (which is fine, it would be far too easy if she does a total 360) I liked her cleverness/charisma in a similar way to orso. And of course the revelation that orso is her brother made for a good plot twist.

Then a big gap between the rest of the characters -
3- Leo is pretty annoying because he constantly complains about his mother and then she is right and he says he learned his lesson and then the cycle repeats.
4 - rikke's future telling abilities are cool and obviously give some cryptic clues for the future. But other than that she is a bit annoying and immature.
5 - everyone else was fine (Vick, clover, some buff guy with glasses, other people I definitely forgot)but they felt like a sideshow for the main four people.

Wasn't my favorite of The First Law universe. Definitely felt more like a prologue to set up the characters and plot for the rest of the story to come.

Great start to this trilogy! Unfortunately, it took me forever to finish this because my library loan was due before I was done with the audiobook and I had to wait a while to get it again. I know I always say it, but Abercrombie's characters are some of the best. Can't wait to read the next book.
