It was teh best of times, and it was the worst of times.
Capitalism comes to the realms, and boy does it suck. Luckily, the royals hardly notice.

I’ve been reading fantasy for a few years now and there is truly nothing like a story from Joe Abercrombie. They aren’t bingeable books in my opinion, but they are incredibly rich with flawed characters and deep dark worlds that make you ponder the ugliness of humanity. So fun!
I loved the original The First Law trilogy. I was skeptical that he could recreate the magic, if you will, in this new Age of Madness trilogy set about 30(ish?) years later. Industry is booming and revolution is brewing in the new age. Once again, the characters are the primary focus, forcing the reader to forget about the plot for a bit and just enjoy getting to know the players in the game. They all suck. None of them are the hero. You love each in one moment, and hate them in the next. My particular favorite was none other than Savine dan Glokta … you read that right. She isn’t a copy of her infamous father, Sand dan Glokta, but she is a force of her own.
Despite not having a clearly linear plot, there is still plenty of action in this book. Ample blood. Ample violence. Not for the faint of heart. Abercrombie is called Lord Grimdark for a reason. I recommend to anyone who wants something different from the classic heroes or the cozy reads. But read the original trilogy first… you will miss a ton of background if you don’t.
I will be back to finish the series soon!
