A Little Hatred

Joe Abercrombie

4.41 AVERAGE

So excited by this new series, with old threads running through it! Simply magic, Joe Abercrombie creates characters you absolutely love, and love to hate, with stunning world building, if you close your eyes you can smell the vapours and hear the din!

Adua is changing, new innovations bring new investment opportunities and Savine dan Glokta is the woman wielding the most power in the society stakes. The fact that everyone fears her father helps.

King Jezal’s son, Prince Orso, is a feckless layabout, heir to the throne and mostly a disappointment to all, including himself.

Leo dan Brock, the young lion, anticipating a fine fought battle against marauders from the North and aided by the Long Eye of the beautiful but odd Rikke and her mad witch Isern-I-Phail.

Stour Nightfall, the Great Wolf, son of Black Calder, grandson of Bethod decides its time the Union were expelled from the North and sets out to make a Name for himself, like those whose songs were still sung. Despite the direction of Wonderful and Clover, he is a bloodthirsty prick and heir to the Northern throne.

When all the players come together, ghosts in Rikke’s hot eye, is it any surprise to find Bayaz, First of the Magi, in the centre of the ring?

Typical Abercrombie: fantastic characters in a brutal, unrelenting world. Superb blend of cold-blooded fantasy and industrialization themes.

It was filled with humour, friendship and bloody violence.
But the romance…WHY??? Why sir? Are you kidding me! I liked how both couples were before the big reveal, I’m so fkn sad…I’m legit holding hope that it’s all gonna turn out to be a lie and they cockblocked “Queen Savine” for nothing, I mean…it rhymes bro.

i consider this book, along with best served cold and the heroes, the best first law book i've read as of today.
probably you can pick a little hatred and read it as your first joe abercrombie book, but you would be losing so much and i can't stress enough how much is worth it to read the original trilogy as well as the standalones. i'm captivated by this world, the characters (both the ones who where already familiar and the newly introduced), and the writing style.

there is not a single dull moment in this book. the plot is very well paced, always with an ace up the sleeve. i can't say which plotline i liked most, leo and rikke in the north with the union fighting against the northmen, or orso and savine in the capital of the kingdom watching the uprising of the working class against the poor conditions they face.

i can't compare first law with anything else i've read. it is unique, dark, harsh, bloody, full of conflict and complex characters and very, very real. one of the best things about abercrombie are his morally ambiguous characters, always masterfully written, and the main four povs are so different and interesting i can't choose my favorite.
one of the most easy 5-star ratings i've given, i can't wait to start the next one.

Interesting. I didn’t particularly like the first hundred pages or so, and I was really wondering what all the fuss was about. None of the characters are particularly likeable, and many of them are not even particularly interesting. There were a few things near the end that seemed really out of character, which I did not like.
Spoiler In particular, the swap between Leo/Rikke and Osso/Severine really bothered me. Both Leo and Osso are not supposed to have ever really connected with a woman before, and then all of a sudden they’re both able to connect with two such different women?
That said, there were some really interesting world building things at the end that do make me want to read the next book.
