More of the same, but whereas there were genuine elements of the fantastic, with promise of relevations in the First Law, here we remain mired in what has since become Joe Abercrombie's signature style. I enjoyed, and I'll likely return for book 2, but I really hope that there is more world building, not just a focus on violence and intrigue.

Too many characters to follow, started to love some character arcs and not care for others so I just wanted to entirely skip most stories to get to my favorite characters.
Fantastic book. Steven Pacey as a narrator takes it to another level.

This is the first book in the Age of Madness trilogy set in the First Law world, you don’t need to have read the previous books to jump in here (I haven't) but many of the story threads started here are unresolved at the end, so you may need to read the following books to fully appreciate this one.
The world is newly industrializing and the dark satanic mills are provoking industrial unrest in the shape of the Breakers and the Burners, added to which the armies of the North are threatening the Union by attacking Angland. At times it read more like historical fiction than fantasy, magic is on the wane but Rikke the first character we encounter has the Long Eye, she has visions relating to past and future.
We follow the POVs of 7 very different characters in this complicated game of fantasy chess. There are lengthy battle scenes and plenty of court intrigue.
