Holy fucking shit I have so many emotions at the end of this book. The interest for this book was admittedly low because the first book just felt like more violent Hunger Games. And when this book opens with Darrow commanding space warfare, it felt like the book was going to be just like Ender’s Game. Goddamn was I wrong. The story starts fairly slow, Darrow fails to win the Academy like he won the Institute and he gets royally pooped on by everyone until he’s stuck in a broom closet of a room just waiting to die. Then he decides “fuck this shit” and decides to duel Cassius to force civil unrest in the Gold community. Once he duels Cassius, all hell breaks loose and it’s a flat out sprint until the end of the book. Darrow slowly building his army and making strong new allies both within the golds and outside the golds. It was just pure entertainment to see him outdueling, outthinking, and outmaneuvering everyone in his way. Now that he’s not stuck with just golds we can finally see him gathering other colors to join his cause and cultivate the seeds of rebellion. The amount of twists and turns in the book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Sevro joining the Sons, the reveal of Ares, the betrayal of Fitchner and Roque, and the death of Augustus were all nail biters. The quiet moment with Darrows mom and the reveal to Mustang were extremely impactful and made me appreciate how real all the characters feel, instead of feeling like archetypes. The last 5 pages had my mind completely blown and sent shivers up my spine. I need to read the next book ASAP.
