A rather intriguing young adult/middle grade horror. A mix of a dreamland, Alice in Wonderland, and Nightmare Before Christmas, but without leaning on either of these too heavily for its story or setting. In some ways, it feels like a hard back to the glory days of Goosebumps, but with less mystery surrounding the monsters and with the setting and situation out young heroes find themselves in.
Lillith’s Hollow and its residents are interesting enough to keep the attention and to have the imagination running. I’m sure any younger reader who enjoys a little scare, but not being frightened, will find a home here.
The only minor issue is, as a British reader, there are a couple of Americanisms that can pull you slightly out of the intended setting (somewhere in England), but it’s only one or two times and not that noticeable.
