2.5 stars. Was rather underwhelmed by the story, didn't find it exciting or had an interesting plot to follow. But had some good bit in it. Might continue the series and give the next book a try

Highly atmospheric, the description of the landscape builds a claustrophobic feel and engenders a sense of fear. The first person present tense narration adds to the suspense. Pretty dark so not one for binge-reading!

I don't know what I feel about this book. I did enjoy it, there were all the elements to make this a great read. A small town, the woods, creepy characters, but something was missing. I didn't connect with the book the way I thought I would have.

Maybe it had to do with the fact that I already saw the end coming. In fact, it seemed too obvious. Maybe it was because I have read so many crime mysteries that I don't feel thrilled anymore. I also didn't enjoy the pace, but that's just me, I prefer books with a faster pace. HOWEVER, I do understand the beauty of an evenly paced and meticulously written story.

Overall, I think a lot of people will like it (which they clearly already do).

This book was provided by the publisher (via NetGalley) for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

After reading a number of books with long chapters that felt like a slog, or that I needed to set aside some time to get through, it’s was thoroughly refreshing to find that this has lots of short chapters. It fits the narrative well - the sentences and chapters are punchy and breathless, adding to the tense atmosphere.
I also thought it refreshing for a male author to create such a complex and fully formed, well written female character, let alone a protagonist - and a deaf one, at that! I struggle to think of another recent example. Her deafness aids (!) the plot without being a gimmick, her frequent mentions of the batteries beeping or feeling the key fob with the spares in it really made her feel fully imagined as a character.
I imagine this will be a series, and look forward to reading more from the author.
