Extremely compelling start, became draggy in the centre, with many characters and storylines left unexplored.
Wanted to love it but felt a little like a wasted weekend read.

I kept waiting for something to happen. This was just so mediocre.
There were parts that I found a bit slow-going, but overall I enjoyed the book. I had seen the Swedish version of the movie several years ago, so it was nice to refresh my memory on what had happened in the film. The film actually stayed rather close to the book, and really only left out the more disturbing details.

I love love love the (original Swedish) movie that's based on this book. I really liked so much of this book and the excellent backstory it provided for the characters I like so much. This was a fast read, and gripping. It's dark and gritty and gross. My heart goes out to Eli. They've been dealt the biggest blows in life but still found love and companionship.
There truthfully was too much pedophilia and child torture for me to truly love this book. The story was excellent but some of the details REALLY could've been left out.

It's more heartbreaking than creepy. And for the very first time, I love a happy ending.
The short synopsis at the back cover was what moved me to read this. "Eli loves the twelve years old Oskar, and Oskar loves the two hundred years old Eli." Big giveaway on what it's about. I thought it'd be a really simple story. I'm sure I've read the title being a movie some time ago, but I can't really picture when and where. So no, haven't watch the movie.
It's Swedish, so yeah, the pace is very slow, and I took my sweet sweet time reading it. What seemed as a simple premise, about two kids being together and so on and so on, turned out to be more complicated than what it looks.
First, I need to get something out of my chest
ELI IS ACTUALLY BOY!!!!!
The story revolves around Oskar and Eli, but it's not just all about them. It's also about Hakan, Thomas, Virginia, Lacke, and many other characters that weave the whole story together. No favorite somehow, maybe because it's more like an ensemble of casts instead of 'Oskar and Eli and everybody around them' kind of story.
The time they spent together grew from something very innocent and childish into something sexier. A lot sexier even after Eli told Oskar her secret. Still, it's so innocent to me. I totally should watch the movie soon.
